My neighbor is turning people against my dog

Dog behind a fence including ‘Suddenly I feel like we're being treated like we don't belong here.'

I took my dog for a walk yesterday, same route we've taken for years, and a neighbor stopped me out of nowhere saying he "shouldn't be here" because he's "scaring people." I was honestly stunned. My dog has never bitten anyone, never barked, he just walks quietly by my side.

I'm almost 50, I mostly keep to myself, and he's pretty much my only real companion. But now I hear this neighbor has been telling others that my dog is "dangerous." Today, two people I've known for years actually crossed the street to avoid us.

I can't explain how humiliating this feels. He hasn't done a single thing wrong, and suddenly I feel like we're being treated like we don't belong here. Am I overreacting, or is this completely unfair?

KittyTaurus Your neighbor is really bored and thirsting for local drama. She (or he) is being a mean girl. Just keep on walking your dog as you always have. Don't even engage or try to "defend" yourself because there is no reason to. People will get bored of the nonsense.

BigPhilosopher4372 Put a pretty big bow on your dog. If temperature allows maybe a nice sweater. Make people look stupid for being scared of him.

    Frosty_Astronomer909 Get cameras too

Elegant-Bee7654 Is your dog on a leash? If not, that could be an issue. Of course, your neighbor shouldn't lie about your dog, but without a leash, people could be fearful. If your dog is on a leash, you're doing all you can to avoid problems. If people who have known you and your dog for years are suddenly choosing to avoid you, you might try walking without your dog and see what happens.

LotsofCatsFl Have you asked why your neighbor thinks your dog is dangerous? Is your dog on a leash?
  • 12
Maine302 Your neighbors are choosing ignorance. They're not your friends. Eff 'em.
  • 13
blackberrybeanz Do you use a leash? That's one of the main things I get annoyed with people here about. We are in a leashed park, it has signs up, but these people think it never applies to them.
  • 14
If you use a leash and your dog behaves as you say I'm sure your other neighbors prob think he's just yapping and being weird.
  • 15
residentvixxen If your dog is well behaved on a leash I see no issue If you are walking your dog without a leash then yes, no matter how well behaved the dog, that is an issue.

No-Grass4965 I agree will all the replies neighbor a j put cute collar, rabbit ears, sweater, and colorful leash. Say hi to everyone you see offer treats they can share with their dog and give extra one to give to your dog. The ride

lying neighbor will hate that you used kindness and understanding vs hollering and trying to change their mind by defending yourself/dog. I'd get a couple mini camera's put one on
  • 18
your dogs collar will show your walks & what goes on. Another camera or two outside your home area your pup goes potty or hangs out. I'd not trust people not to mess with your dog. Please update.
  • 19
MikeCheck_CE Obviously it's unfair. That said, what do you do. Continue to walk your dog like you always do and tell people your neighbor is an a hat who keeps slandering your dog for no reason.
  • 20
Material-Emu-8732 Throw a party or bbq, exercise the pup before so nice and calm, then invite everyone but the ah les. Take photos with dog wearing bday hat on too lol

la_descente People react like that with my dog too. She's just a big pitty is all. But like others have said, get security cameras installed today. Do not leave her in the back yard alone when you're not home.

Talk to your other neighbors without your dog around. The ones who walked across the street. It could be a misunderstanding, it could be what he said to them. Like I personally cross the street so others don't have to.

(Yay I can post a pic of my boy who crossed the rainbow bridge!) So 1 of my neighbors accused me of allowing my boy to pop on his pl little area of dirt & weeds & not picking it up when he was only sniffing there. Even when I pulled out extra large bags he just mean. mugged me.
  • 25
I posted his pic on NextDoor with a caption 'Not Guilty' & without ID ing the mean neighbor explained what happened. All the neighbors responded by paying extral attention to big doofus in his last days. He was SOOO happy. Good luck!

Jacque_38 I saw a video about a man who's dog had terminal cancer and he put letters in everyone's mailbox to invite them to greet him on his final walk thru the neighborhood before he passed. Sort of like a parade except the dog went
  • 27
around and met everyone outside their homes at a predetermined date and time. Maybe you could do something similar and organize like a birthday parade for your dog? Include fun facts about your dog
  • 28
like what his breed is, how old he is, what is favorite treat is, and maybe a picture of him with his favorite toy. Could be a good way to get the neighborhood to see how sweet the gentle boy really is.
